The efficacy of intraoral appliance (palatal crib) in the control of thumb sucking habit in 6-12 years old children

Objective:
Non–nutritive sucking habits (NNS) are common among young children and Digit sucking habit, is the most common. This study was done to evaluate the efficacy of intraoral appliance (Palatal crib) in Digit –sucking management in 6-12 year-old children.
Methods & Materials:
This study was an uncontrolled clinical trial study included 15 Children who attended for treatment of Digit-sucking habits. After the  examination ,they started Appliance therapy (Palatal crib) for 4 months and 1 month follow up for evaluation the recurrence .Then the data analyzed with wilcoxon signed rank and friedman test.
Results:
This study concluded 15 patients with mean 8.97 years old. The wilcoxon signed rank test showed that this treatment method could control daytime and nighttime habit with significant difference (p<0.05). The friedman test showed there was not any significant difference between first ,second ,third, fourth and fifth month successful rate (p=0.486).the study results showed that the appliance could control the nighttime habit more than daytime habit but it was not significant (P value= 0.068).
Conclusion:
The use of Palatal crib appliance was successful in day and night thumb-sucking habit control .The Palatal crib appliance was more successful in nighttime thumb-sucking control than day habit control ,but it was not significant. After 4 months appliance therapy and 1 month follow up in fifth month there was no habit recurrent.
