Nonextraction Treatment

Roberto Lima Filho
Orthodontist, Founder President of the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics

Considerable contraversy surrounds the question of whether better long-term results are achieved by extraction or nonextraction therapies. Nonextraction treatments have gained widespread popularity. In the last two decades, rapid maxillary expansion (RME) has become routine in clinical orthodontics. Although initially this procedure was used to correct posterior crossbite, there are several other indications. These include children with specific arch length problems whose profile disturbances, so frequently associated with removal of teeth are to be avoided. This presentation analyzes the long-term outcome of cases with severe crowding treated nonextraction.
Learning objectives - Attendees will learn the diagnosis and the benefits of early treatment of skeletal discrepancies. Growth modification and optimal timing for treatment will be explored along the presentations. Also, it will be demonstrated the utilization of growth and development to create spaces for the teeth before they erupt into position of malocclusion.
